Estrogen Dominance and Using Essential Oils

Those of us with estrogen dominance need to be very careful of any hormone or hormone mimicking elements that enter our bodies including what essential oils we use.  Our system is already so overloaded with estrogen and our liver is most likely not able to keep up with the flushing of our system from the extra estrogens circulating in our blood.  Your body is already producing its own estrogen and our fat cells as they are burned are releasing more estrogen into our system.  We are also ingesting phyto and Xeno estrogens from our food, beauty products and environment.  The last thing your body needs is a slathering of essential oils that also mimic estrogen.

Unfortunately almost all essential oils with the exception of citrus oils contain some level of phytoestrogens.  All of your citrus oils such as lemon, lime, mandarin and orange contain little to no phytoestrogens and should be the first oils you reach for in use for body products such as lotions, shampoos and deodorants.  Coincidently citrus oils, especially lemon is very good for your liver and will help restore its full function in boosting your ability to flush out extra estrogen.

Tea Tree, Lavender, Cinnamon and Peppermint happen to be on the high end of the phytoestrogen scale.  Now in a person with balanced hormones and a healthy liver, these phytoestrogens will be no big deal.  They will not turn your sons into girls or make your husbands grow breasts.  Under normal conditions their liver will simply flush out the phytoestrogens as waste.  However as we all know those of us with Estrogen Dominance are not dealing with a normal output of estrogen or a healthy perfectly functioning liver.

I saw the most marked improvement in my hormones such as more regulated cycles, less bleeding and a lessoning of PMS symptoms when I cut out all essential oils except Citrus oils.  Now I don't mean I don't use them for medical intervention.  If I have a burn I still put lavender on it or if I am cut I still apply yarrow.  What I no longer do is apply them liberally for emotions, perfuming, and in my body products.  I would typically in times past apply oils every few hours throughout my day for a myriad of causes.  I also now look to see if one of the citrus oils will work for my ailment before I rely upon the other oils.  I do hold out hope that as my body is naturally producing less estrogen and more of my fat cells dissipate I will be able to go back to regular oil usage, however for now my body can't handle it.

Next week I will discuss in detail how you can use your citrus oils to help your liver, which will in turn help your body flush excess estrogen.

  1. Have you written the article on using citrus oils to help the liver? Since the posts aren't dated I can't tell if this is an old or current article. :) I'm spending $$$ every month on organic progesterone trying to deal with hair loss and hot flashes and estrogen dominance. But I'm gaining weight on it, worsening the cycle. So I'm really I'm really interested in hearing what you have to say. Thanks

  2. Also, I've been low progesterone all my adult life, so now peri menopause is wreaking havoc. I've been reading to use thyme and oregano to increase progesterone. Are you saying they also increase estrogen, so should be avoided as well? Thanks.

    1. As someone who has struggled with the same issues I would say essential oils are not the route to go when trying to treat estrogen dominance. Other than the citrus oils in my experience the essential oils have done more harm than good. I would stick with a natural progesterone, cleaning your environment and the items you put on your body of excess estrogens and working on strengthening your liver so it can properly flush your body of the excess estrogen.

  3. My diet and environment have been clean for years. I've been using an organic progesterone that worked well for a few months, but now the hot flashes have returned so it appears to have run its course. That's why I'm looking for alternatives. How do I strengthen the liver?

  4. In the past decade, Mexico's energy sector has suffered from deteriorating operational, financial, and technological capabilities, sharply lowering production for a vital source of state revenue. Production has fallen from a record 3.4 million barrels per day in 2004 to about 2.5 million today. Faced with rising pensions and health-care bills, the government's high dependency on oil revenues (around 30 percent of total revenues) is becoming increasingly worrisome.

  5. My husband has been rubbing my sore back with thieves oil and diffusing it in the house due to my son having a bad cough. I suspect the ingredients have raised my estrogen. I have Endometriosis and have been very good with controlling my estrogen thorugh diet, but this month I'm depresssed, sore boobs, wan't to eat all things wrong, no libido, heavy feeling in my liver, etc. It is very refreshing to read your articles as I was searching for an essential oil to boost my progesterone, but you changed my mind, thank you. Can you comment on my thought regarding thieves oil?

  6. Cara, I am so glad that I came across your article. I have just ordered. Progestelle by Peter Eckhart, MD and it came with a thick brochure filled with explanations on what to avoid when trying to using progestelle to level out hormones. I got so disappointed that it is better not to use essential oils as I am a wellness advicate for Doterra oils myself and have been doing pretty good with it. No I see your article and I start to realize different things now. What do you think of frankenscence oil and myrr as well? They are so healing and powerful. Can i use them or they might be phytoestrogenic as well?

  7. Cara, do you have a list of EO that are less phytoestrogens along with citrus oils? How did you realize that oils actually are not helpful with your estrogen dominance? There are so many articles on the web that give a lot of testimonials that to the contrary oils help to level out hormones in a body. The more I read more confused I get. Please help.

  8. I think you really have to kind of work it out for yourself. Here is what happened to me. I started using the essential oils heavily, for scenting he air, for ailments, stomach aches etc. I almost always had an oil on my body. During that time I was having periods for weeks at a time. Sometimes my period would last over a month with many clots etc. I am at this time not using essential oils at all unless I have an immediate need like Yarrow for bleeding or peppermint for a bad stomach ache. Now I am cycling regularly though sometimes skipping months. Life is so much better for me in regards to my hormones. I know for sure it was the essential oils. I took Progestelle for a while, and I probably should take it again, but they have good info on things to avoid in their literature. The website is www.womhoo.com. I also got a list of items to avoid from them. I hope that helps some!

  16. I have not read all these posts but I would like to point out that a holistic approach is always best. In terms of hormones this means an anti inflammatory diet, stress reduction and liver support to help flush the body, amongst other things. Then you can add in the complementary support for your case. It is always best to get hormone levels tested and not to self diagnose. Essentila oils are infact very good allies for women's health and not just the citrus ones! A note on Estrogen: estrogen dominance is not a recognised medical term. What is relevant is whether you have estrogen excess, meaning more than the average level. You can have low progesterone but not have estrogen excess, in which case essential oils can be a great help. Even if you do have estrogen excess many are in fact adptogenic which means they help achieve balance in the right direction. I am a qualified aromatherapist and essential oils can be very beneficial for women's health problems. The key is to get a proper diagnosis. And then go from there. One someone else says may be totally wrong for you. There is no reason whatsoever to rule out essential oils. But dose and how you administef them is important. Generally it is not advisable to take them orally unless under the guidance of a doctor familiar with essential oils and neither is it safe to use them neat on the skin therapeutically, despite companies out there pushing this route of administration (they just want to sell you more of the stuff ;) Essential oils are what they say, the essence of the plants aromatic chemicals which can be much stronger than herbs or tinctures even. So do not be surprised if you experience adverse reactions when they are not selected, chosen and administered in the right proportion for you. Just my 2 cents. Get a proper diagnosis first and then consult a fully certified aromatherapist or naturopath who uses essential oils to help you, if that's what your body tells you to do. Most of the people who push essential.oils for MLM companies are not certified aromatherapists they are just given basic training by the company. Many sell.therapeutic grade this means nothing certified organic is the best option for therapeutic and pyschospiritual treatment :)

    1. One other thing. Essential oils for therapeutic purposes should only be used for a max of 21 days at a time and then the body needs a break for at least a week, before resuming treatment. It can take on average 3-9 cycles to see improvement in your menstrual cycle. Sorry for all the typos in the above comment!
